A third/fourth grade teacher explains how she created a dig site using clear plastic bins. She was able to utilize a local museum to acquire fossil kits. She also suggests suppliers that offer fossil kits for sale. A student worksheet is included as are details of what worked well with her students during this lesson on geologic time. Also, there are a couple of literature connections. The author notes that she teaches in a small elementary school for students with a wide range of learning disabilities. Her class sizes were under 12 students per class. Creating 3 or 4 bins for 3 or 4 students each is manageable with these smaller class sizes. A teacher with twice as many students would need several more bins to make this lesson hands-on for larger class sizes.
