Before literacy and science integration was identified as a “Best Practice”, before the wonderful Picture-Perfect Ladies and their science book series, way back in 1999 science teachers instinctively knew to include literature in their lessons. We all probably remember our first times to read aloud to our science classes. I did it with Charlotte’s Web during my arachnid unit (where Charlotte’s eating behaviors are described in detail). This 6th grade science teacher includes a book about the first successful flight across the English Channel to begin her lesson on flight that culminates in a paper airplane design challenge. This is an excellent article to read so that one can consider how the 5 Es and inquiry science have evolved over the past decade. It is affirming to know that excellent teachers have always been around to share their enthusiasm and pass it on to their students!
