I really like the ideas presented in this lesson plan. It engages students into an authentic science experience that can be tied to a season. However, I do have a few concerns. First, pumpkins and pumpkin carving is associated with Halloween, and there are several cultures/organizations of people that do not celebrate or acknowledge Halloween. An alternative assignment would need to be considered and assigned, if there are parental objectives. I also have concerns regarding the use of knives in carving. I would consider completing this lesson without "carving" the pumpkin. Or I would have one pumpkin per lab group, and I or a parent volunteer could carve the top off so the students would have access to the insides of the pumpkin. I would also consider using permanent markers for decorating the outside of the pumpkin instead of carving. Overall a great lesson plan with modifications.
