Learning from Landfills: Students learn an environmental lesson as they investigate conditions necessary for decomposition of garbage

As part of a unit on energy conservation, students suggested creating a landfill in the classroom. For the experiment students constructed nine clear plastic shoebox landfills. Students were provided visual evidence that certain inorganic items will not decompose even with the necessary conditions. This activity taught students about decomposition and reinforced the importance of recycling.
