Teaching with stories helps student see science a part of a broader understanding of the world. The use of two trade books in lessons about the states of matter is discussed with an activity for a younger and older elementary group. The often used oobleck example provides an opportunity to think critically and to help students understand that there can be ambiguities in classification. While students in this age group can not reasons for non-Newtonian fluids they probably can name a few once they understand the given age appropriate description .
