Page Keeley discusses one of her informative probes entitled “Is It Made of Parts” which is a scaffolded formative assessment. The teacher begins by asking students to describe the “rule” they used to decide what things are made of parts. Next the article goes on to describe how the teacher asks the students what they think the animal uses its parts for. And this continues on with a discussion of plant parts. This scaffolding method adds a new depth to a formative assessment probe.
