After participating in a professional development class entitled “Energy and the Environment,” sponsored by the American Electric Power Company, the author studied coal as an energy source and its effect on the environment. The final assignment was to develop an activity related to the workshop that combined art and geology. This article describes how a cooperative project was developed and implemented by incorporating the construction of sand art geologic column models into an Earth science class.
