Schoobio (Schoolyard Biocultural Diversity Community) is a free, transdisciplinary, project-based, student-led curriculum. It focuses on active learning culminating in youth developing a sense of place, envisioning their ideal bioculturally diverse school grounds, and advocating for their plan with school and community leaders. The curriculum’s goal is increased numbers of school grounds reflecting the biodiversity and cultural traditions of the students. These “habitat islands” will help species connect with larger habitat areas, forming green belts within cities and throughout the countryside. They will also make school grounds more reflective of the cultures and traditions of their students and communities.
In this workshop, teachers will learn about the progressive activities of Schoobio, experiencing science, culture, and literary aspects: mapping school grounds, engaging in a nature-culture exercise, and envisioning their ideal ecological, culturally diverse school grounds.
