I am doing a lesson in my 5th grade Science class about food webs. I need assistance with the Engage portion of my 5E. I have seen many lessons that use a ball of yarn or string and pass it to the students to show the different chains within a web. However, I have a particullarly rough group of boys whom I do not believe would be able to particiapte in this in an appropriate manner. I would love to hear some other suggestions on an excellent Engagement activity to use. Thank you!

Hello Cody, You might want to go to the HHMI BioInteractive site and download cards with pictures of producers and consumers. You could have your students work in small groups instead of a whole class activity. Each group could create a simple food chain first, then use more cards to create a food web. Each group could share their food chain before moving on to make a food web. You can also download the Educator Materials document. I suggest you downlad the single-sided cards because they show the plant or animal and provides students with some information about it.
