Hello!  I am a pre-service teacher and am currently in a course called Teaching Science. One of our assignments is to teach a science lesson. I will be teaching a lesson to a classroom of 6th grade students. Any advice for lesson planning for this age group? Any favorite lessons or topics?  Thanks!

Dear Courtney, Check out the links below with some ideas I found in the Learning Center about teaching the solar system. Please let me know how your lesson goes - share with others here. http://common.nsta.org/resource/?id=10.2505/4/ss07_030_09_12 http://common.nsta.org/resource/?id=10.2505/4/ss09_032_08_56 Flavio.

First thing, definitely get with your mentor teacher and ask what the students are learning the week you are planning on teaching your science lesson. After you have your topic, (depending on what it is), think about how you would make the lesson engaging with the use of modeling, activities, manipulatives, and technology. These are key elements that work wonders in teaching young students. A great one that a lot of students work on is building a bridge with toothpicks and glue. The goal of the bridge is to see how much weight the bridge can hold. Another great one is when learning about different natural disasters, the students can research a specific natural disaster and create a skit in a small group. I remember working on this and all the students had a great time. They were able to use their knowledge on what they learned with technology, props, and just working with other classmates. I hope this helps!
