Modeling Instruction in Elementary Science

I am a K-4 science specialist. I have been learning a lot about modeling instruction in the middle and upper grades and was wondering if anyone is aware of examples of modeling instruction in the lower grades. There seems to be a dearth of resources in this area, and I'm interested in helping to rectify this. Thanks!

Check out Phenomenon-Based Learning and the Gizmos & Gadgets books from NSTA Press.  Here’s the elementary version:

The activities are both engaging and pedagogically effective, as described in the book’s Introduction.

There are kits of materials designed to go with the book that are sold by Arbor Scientific.  You can see them here:

The kits are expensive, but they give you enough materials for dozens of activities and would be a great investment for any school, even without the books.  If you have funds for materials, definitely consider them.

I was a STEM Master Teacher for the past three years serving 4 elementary schools. I have all of the Picture Perfect Science books and use those to help guide teachers. I also use the NGSS at NSTA, http://ngss.nsta.org/Classroom-Resources.aspx for resources, planning, and lessons.

Head Start on Science and Science Learners in the Early Years For thinking about primary science you can check into - the NSTA Statement on early Childhood Science - each of the authors connects to a great literature review on the great learning taking place in this age range. NSTA and NAEYC have had demos/booths on the great work going on about "Ramps and Pathways" Please feel free to post, message or connect -- this is the greatest age group! Teach on; Wendi
