I am a student teacher in a 3rd-grade classroom and this year I am having a particularly hard time with classroom management. It sometimes interferes with the productivity of the class and I am not able to go through an entire lesson because I need to refocus the students. Some students do not follow my directions because they realize that I am not the main classroom teacher. What classroom management techniques would help me?

Classroom management is a constant learning process for me as well. I’m also in a 3rd grade classroom this semester and I often use attending cues to refocus my students. There are times when I have to do it 2 or 3 times but I always wait till I have their attention and also do wait time. I don’t move on to the next part of the lesson until they are completely focused. I’ve done this from the first day I was with them and its created a routine with the students.
