Science and Reggio Emilia inspired learning

Hello everyone! My name is Joey, and I am a lower school science specialist at King School in Stamford. This upcoming year, our Prek/K programs are shifting towards a Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice/pointers to share for someone who has little background on the style of education. I am excited to learn more about it, but would like some support to get my year off and running. I greatly appreciate the feedback, and look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Hi Joey, 

Welcome to Reggio-Inspired!  I teach preK at a Reggio-Inspired preschool, where I also serve as the preschool pedagogista.  The Reggio Emilia Approach , often called Reggio-inspired  outside of Italy, ties in beautifully with science.  On a recent study trip to Reggio Emilia, I found evidence for every one of the NGSS science and engineering principles in the schools I visited

Have you looked at The North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA) yet?  They have a wealth of free and specific resources on their site.  I’ll message you with some others.  One key thing to remember as you continue your journey is that no two Reggio-inspired schools will be exactly the same as the socio-constructivist nature of the approach makes it very place-based.

I don’t know what standards or other topical / procedural requirements your school has, but having NSTA resources at your fingertips will be a huge help.  The more you can structure the settings so that your students can ask their own questions, follow their own question thread, and build their own knowledge for themselves, the better your year will be.

Hi Joey,

The Reggio Approach is based on discovering children's thinking and providing opportunities for children to express those thoughts. One instance might  be having a child draw or build his or her theory about how rain works. Once the thinking has been made visible, conversations among children, and teachers acting as researchers into the child's thinking process probe for clarification if the theory. The teaching focus is not direct instruction, but on setting up an environment that provokes children to encounter and make sense of interesting phenomena. Rich materials, a beautiful environment, and dialogue are fundamental. Have fun!

Hi Joey -- The entire issue of NSTA's Science and Children Journal in October 2018 was dedicated to the Reggio approach.  You and your colleagues could get insights into learning opportunities that include Reggio approaches with NGSS!
