I absolutely love this idea! The kids can each have their own bag and add their own flavors. Or just make one big batch of vanilla and let them add their own toppings. What a fun science lesson!

Will be great with the kiddos. I would even let them use popsicle sticks and paper to create a sail. This way they can all make them unique.

I think that the teacher approached the problem in a reasonable way. The students were going to feel left out regardless because they were not with the class. This way they get to spend the days still part of a class. It would have been unfair for them to just sit in the office all day.
