I am also a student still but so far it seems you can incorporate your theme into your lessons in a lot of ways whether the lesson revolve around your theme, may just have some relation to your theme like group sorting, stickers or stamps, or some of your lessons could have no relation to your theme.

Hey Sara,
Perhaps you could use a teachers guide book to make sure you cover all of your bases standards wise and gradually customized the activities you do based on what you see other teachers do, your own ideas and experiences, and your students' interests.

Perhaps you could do mini labs as a wake up activity on dreaded Mondays. Something that does not take much longer than bell work but would still give you and your kids more lab time. Maybe this link will give you some ideas.
