I have found that many students these days do not know how to hold a polite conversation. Often they do not even realize that their tone or words could be seen as rude. It is a skill that many are not taught at home.

I love the idea of a science question of the day. I think I will try to incorporate that next year, especially with the 5th grade writing exam. Any extra writing they can get is a benefit.

@ amber - I agree with you completely. Students and teachers have gotten so used to standardized tests using multiple choice that students can no longer explain much of their thought process. I ask my students daily to explain their answers and it is like pulling teeth to get a response. We can usually only get to a detailed explanation through constant questioning and having numerous students ...
