These are excellent STEM related applications that students can learn a lot from! They are engaged in measurements, concepts of plant life cycles, energy and nutrient reqirements, phase changes, environmental/seasonal and geochemical cycles, critical thinking, the "if... then..." style of reasoning, questions, failures, rethinking, and so on.
