Shedding Light on Engineering Design

Great Overview of Applying Engineering Design
Shedding Light on Engineering Design was a wonderful resource to begin the exploration of creating lessons that are based on standards using Engineering Practices, such as standard 3-5-ETS1-2: “ “Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem” (NGSS, 2015). One of the things that stood out to me in this article was the idea of creating an engineering design brief. The brief includes the description of the context of the problem, the targeted end user, the client, the problem and the requirements for the design. This brief helps students to take on the role of the engineer and helps to create an entry point into the lesson. This article gave me some great insights on how to develop an engineering lesson for my fifth grade students.
