Hurricanes Collection

Great Collection!
Great collection Ashley! I found it very informative and relevant as we live in a hurricane prone area. Living in South Florida, it is extremely important to be aware and well educated on the risks of being surrounded by water and the precautions that need to be taken when dealing with hurricanes; especially for young children who will most likely experience this scary event at some point in their lives. In the collection, there are resources that explain what cause hurricanes and more importantly, how we can protect our communities from the effects of a natural disaster. The unintended consequences of humans intervening with nature in effort to prevent natural disasters without a good understanding of the big picture is also explained. One article provides an interactive lesson that engages students in building a structure that can withstand hurricane winds which provides them with an opportunity to explore engineering practices. I also liked the poem that was included in the collection to provide students with a fun, literacy sample that highlights what it would be like to experience a hurricane. Overall, this collection would be very useful for elementary school teachers who are covering a science unit on hurricanes. Good job!
