Susan, I agree that before tackling this concept you need to teach children how to respect each other’s ideas. I like how you mentioned that students need to learn how to disagree with each other. That is so important, especially when they spend so much time in school trying to get the right answer. They need to learn that there isn’t always one right answer and how to deal with it.

Miriam, I too felt this was a “perfect world” type article. I agree 100% that discussions need to occur and teachers need to give feedback but I really worry about what would happen when students are asked to comment on other students, especially when the teacher picks them. This article worried me a little. I enjoy having group discussions with students and using questioning to have students explain their thinking. What worried me was the student to student discussion.
