Concept Development Big Idea 14
This collection includes various articles and chapters from books pertaining to the development and organization of living organisms. The myriad of options to read from has a lot to do with the hierarchical structures in which organism are arranged beginning with the cellular portion of the body. The author has also taken the time to include information about the introduction of ecology, and nutrition. The articles on ecology is very basic as it has posits forty-eight activities that can be used in the a fourth to eighth grade classroom in regards to the meaning of ecology and how the abiotic and biotic factors of an environment are interdependent upon one another for survival. The activities have various problems in which students take on the responsibility trying to figure out ways of solving them. What was enjoyable about this particular article is that is helps to teach students about sustainability and how problems are occurring within the natural environment and also plausible solutions that students can come up with in order to change what has been done to the ecosystem. The chapter in the book also posits how ecosystem vary due to adaptation to the conditions that the organisms are exposed to, if the conditions are conducive to the life of the organism will thrive and flourish; however, if the conditions change and if the organism cannot find what it needs for life then it is presented with two options which are either to migrate or to die. This in turn can change the very landscape or biodiversity of any ecosystem. Another article that I thoroughly enjoyed was, “The Goals of Ecological Approach,” in which the author posits the complexities of living systems and how changes or disruptions in these system can result in catastrophic disrepair.
Thus, I find this collection to be extremely useful in the material that I will teach on because it has the elements needed to give instruction on the flow of matter and energy in an ecosystem. I enjoyed this collection as I completed some the activities to build upon the knowledge that I have read about in my sci- pack. I cannot use the activities presented in this particular article because I am teaching kindergarten, yet is gives me some ideas about the salient characteristics should be focused on in my lesson. I found that the underlying theme about the expositions can relate also to the Big Idea seventeen in science which discusses interdependence. Although I found the collection to be very large, I enjoyed the creation of this collection as it has presented information that I need presently and also the future.
