I always reccomend keeping invertebrtes as class pets, such as mealworms, isopods, or hissing cockaroackes. They are extrmely low mainenence, you can go through multiple generations and see different life stages, and helps kids develop some sympathy and respect for all living things, not just the cute and fluffy ones. I think that building a good learning community in the classroom is just as important as the curriculum.
