I love this book. This particular chapter id full of great ideas for initiating journal writing and very clear methods to assess. The book targets middle school ages but is definitely able to be used with fourth and fifth graders.

This chapter is on science "journaling" as opposed to science "notebooking". The author provides a number of ideas teachers can use to have their students reflect on science in the classroom and their daily lives (including sentence starters), grading suggestions (good for journals or notebooks), student management suggestions for differentiation or absences, and a sample rubric. What the author does Not provide are ways to use the journal as a science notebook for taking notes or writing lab descriptions, although it is indicated either of these uses are also good to develop writing skills. If you want information on notebooking, don't disregard this article, the ideas for student reflection are good, but suppliment this with additional information. It does provide good information on how to develop a journal about science.
