This article describes the Oregon Department of Education’s efforts to develop effective scoring guides for scientific inquiry. The guide covers the following scientific skills: the ability to form questions or hypothesis; designing an investigation; collection and presenting data; and analyzing and interpreting results. The rubric is included with this article as well as some pro’s and con’s about using these rubrics which use a scale of 1 through 6. This might be a useful tool for others to use.

Scoring guides were developed in four areas -- Forming a Question or Hypothesis, Designing an Investigation, Collecting and Presenting Data, and Analyzing and Interpreting Results. Student work samples were scored based on a scale of 1-6. Students were allowed to redo their work to achieve higher scores and thus went through a learning curve until concepts were better understood. Two of the rubrics are provided. This is a great example of how to develop scientific thinking within your student body.
