It is not easy to coax answers out of students at any grade level. It is common for them to respond to a question with one word answers but that doesn’t always mean they understand even if they give you an answer that seems appropriate. This is a wonderful article for all teachers at any grade level. Ask probing questions until you get the answer you want. This is a technique that needs to be employed by all teachers.

Before reading this article, I have know that teachers’ questions can be sorted as three types: convergent questions, divergent questions and probing questions. Convergent questions focuses on knowledge or comprehension, which require students to give a correct answer to show their understanding. Divergent questions can have many alternatives or correct answers, which help to open students' mind. Probing questions are a series of questions, which can explore knowledge, extend and justify ideas. In this article, the author focus on probing questions.Firstly, the author think that teachers should keep probing in the classroom. Teachers should use various questioning techniques, such as wait time, to promote students to answer questions. Then teachers should continual questions to help students to find answer and figure out the truth. Secondly, the author clarify about the brevity of questions. Many students tend to give a brief answers in class. It is not a problem. So teacher should not doubt about students’ understanding. Therefore, teachers should stop to make assumptions. Finally, the author states that the questions start with “How” and “Why” are important in science education. Students can answer these questions with a description of the relevant evidence that leads us to believe their program. It also help to check students understanding. In conclusion, questioning is a good strategies in science education. As a teacher, I will utilize different types of questions to promote my students’ learning in my class.
