An experienced teacher knows that the first 10 minutes of class time is taken up with administrative work such as attendance. With this in mind prepare a daily routine which engages the whole class for that ten minute period that you can address in 5 minutes after you are finished. This can be the question of the day, or a look-it-up activity or a brain teaser. In short, keep the students busy with a stimulating activity so you can move on from there.
