Sometimes when an experiment goes wrong this is the best opportunity to learn what science is all about. This article describes such an experience by preservice teachers. This is a good example that the teacher is not always correct. Furthermore, the error should lead to a look at all aspects of what was done – was the experiment done correctly, were the materials used working or were they the correct ones to use, and so on. As stated in the article ‘persistence and repeated investigations revealed a solution to the problem.’ Those of us that have taught multiple classes in a day often realize that what didn’t work in first period was no problem toward the end of the day.

This is a great article for pre-service and current science teachers, as it reminds us that “science is not about knowing, but trying to find out.” This quote from the article can serve as a reminder that science is not about having the answers – it is about finding out the answers. I especially like that the point of the story was told using a real pre-service teacher situation. This article was well worth the time it took to read it. I highly recommend it.
