My anatomy class just finished this case and loved every minute of it. The introductory reading captured their attention and piqued their curiosity. They were challenged to determine the genetics behind skin color. They were intrigued by the article "Skin Deep" and the theories that explain why so many skin tones are found among humans. They also gain a better appreciation of how similar all humans are and that the differences really are only skin deep.

An article from Vogue magazine is used to start a case study about skin color and Mendalian genetics. Background information is provided as well as charts and teaching notes that include classroom management. While most of the science is directed for a college level class it might be useful for an AP biology class situation as well. The article shows how a simple story can lead to scientific investigation and knowledge.
