The author of this editorial points out notebooks can go beyond just recording procedures, drawing sketches, and more. An important function can be explanation construction. This is a change from writing about what the student does to what the students learned from an experiment. This activity required scaffolding and practice. In the elementary grades it should start with discussions about the meaning of activities. This is great advice for teachers.
