Understanding color is not as simple as one can imagine. Young children start learning about mixing colors as they mix paint to arrive at different combination. These pigments absorb light so mixing many colors produces a color we call black. Mixing many colors of light produce what we call white light. This is not well understood by children. The short activity presented in this article is a start to helping children understand the difference.

In this article, the author describes a unique approach to teaching students about the color spectrum. Using the pigments from flowers, students engage in a hands-on activity that enables them to discover the pigment's constituent colors. I really like the cross-ciricular connections of this lesson with art. Additionally, there are many connections that can be formed between human biology (cones and rods) and botany (why don't certain colors like black and true blue are rarely found in flowers).
