Water is unique in its ability to dissolve polar substances and some non-polar substances. This activity appears to be about solubility but it has deeper meanings into the nature of science. This activity is a great one to use with students to help them understand the concept of variables and developing a ‘fair test’. Students need to learn that a controlled experiment can only have one variable and that not all tests are designed equally. I might use this activity at the beginning of a school year.
