Using interview assessment to link doing with understanding is an interesting approach that is explained in this article by a chemistry teacher. The author uses one particular lab to explain how she does the interview either to the small group (no more than three students) or as a laboratory assignment. She includes the questions she asks to give the reader more insight as to how this can be done. She explains that an alternative assignment is provided to students who are not currently being interviewed so that the class as a whole is always busy. Grading explanation is also provided. This is a good approach to solving the disconnection between doing and understanding if one has the time.

This article explains how a high school teacher’s reflections on how to help her students retain pertinent information longer led to a creative way to incorporate writing and assessment of learning. After students completed a lab, they answered a series of questions that were later used in an interview. Because the students became the experts to be interviewed, they were more attentive to what was going on in the lab and why. The author does caution that this activity is time consuming.
