The Sky’s the Limit: Parents and first-grade students observe the sky

by: Deborah Roberts

In this study of the sky and moon, students went outside after school each day to observe the sky and record their observations in their moon journals. The unexpected surprise was the involvement and reactions of students’ parents. This journal activity provided opportunities for parents and children to spend time together without pressure and share a common experience of learning about the moon. It allowed parents to be involved in their child’s “school world” and share cultural traditions. In addition, this activity provided an easy way to integrate literature and motivate students to write clearly in their daily moon journals.
