“Fungus Amongus” by Deidre Wakely seems like a great resource to teach students about the lifecycle and roles of fungi in the ecosystem! I’ve taught about fungi for a few years now, but have never found an activity like this that includes active movement and a game, two components that have great potential to help students connect with the material in a really fun way. The data gathering and analysis component is also very creative, and helps ground the lesson in science education. The game does seem a bit complicated, so playing it a few times as suggested is probably a good idea. I think this activity would be perfect for a fungi unit, tied together with a hands-on mushroom dissection lab and a fungi foray. Excited to give this lesson a try!

A simple activity that has students working with the life cycle of a fungus. I like the activity because teaching learning cycles can become context bound to certain animals and this would help prevent that. I also like the activity because students are also looking at the role of the fungus in a larger environmental context which is very important. Students use themselves, poker chips, and information cards to complete the activity. Simple materials that can have a great impact on learning.
