With all the demands for more time for literacy and mathematics instruction, what a wonderful way to do two things, increase time in science and get parents involved than to take the advice of this author! She suggests assigning 15 min of unstructured outside time with family members or pets outside to explore the environment they live in and time in class once in a while to share new things they have found. In addition, she suggests a family science night or science fun night to provide parents with suggestions on how to help students to learn from these experiences as well as notes home once in a while. This would be a great way to supplement the science curriculum!

This article describes ways to get the family engaged in their child’s science learning in an informal setting of the home. Suggestions include assigning science homework that might include unstructured time outside making observations, provide a ‘science rich environment’ in the classroom, host a science night with families, and learn about (during open house) and build on your students family rich nature experience to support students learning . These are all great ideas that may or may not be useful for students from inner city students.
