This article describes a form of professional development called lesson study. This is a collaborative effort by a group of teachers to design a test, revise a lesson focusing on student learning. This is a four part lesson-study cycle that includes planning and designing; teaching; reflection to make revisions; and reteaching any particular lesson. The article elaborates on each of the four part lesson and provides a helpful chart and great resources to follow up on this technique. It sounds interesting but as a classroom teacher it would seem to require more time to accomplish this task of studying students’ thinking and learning.
