Students are introduced to The Deep Time Diaries to learn about field journals and to introduce literature into the science classroom. Students working in groups select a particular geological time period and ask to compare information in the diaries to specific scientific information such as climate, plant life, etc. Students then add writing to this mix when they create their own field journals. This blend of literature, writing and scientific research make an interesting short project for what might be perceived as a boring topic of study.

This articles discusses one teacher's experience with having her students create a group project as a culminating activity for their unit on geologic time. While I think that it would be a good way for students to review what they have learned, I don't think that is a true inquiry based project. Teachers could modify it so students are responsible for more than just researching time periods.
