Using Standards to Address Diversity in Science

A scrutiny of the national and some state science standards indicates that middle school science teachers don't have a frame of reference to depict an "application of equity and diversity" in a classroom. The author helps to fill the void of "how" by effectively illustrating how middle school teachers might apply diversity in their science classroom by presenting a standards-based, Earth science lesson that encompasses weather patterns as they relate to the Earth system structure, and delves into weather forecasting careers using the process of scientific inquiry.
