Formative assessment is sometimes called assessment for learning. This article describes what Page Keeley calls ‘action research.’ This is described as ‘QUEST.’ You ask a question, select a formative assessment that answers that question, tally students results to evaluate student responses, seek out what others has learned through research, and finally evaluate the implications of your teaching by comparing your research and your classroom results. First a disclaimer - I am a huge fan of the Uncovering Student Ideas series and this article is written by one of the primary authors. The references to using probes from the series were actually a distraction to me. Ms. Keely's description of using the probes to inform your own teaching and how to use that first rush of student data to inform your teaching.
