Students create a 3-D object that is an analogy of a cell and present their project to the class. The goal for this project is for students to create an authentic connection to the form and functions of organelles. Students have to represent at least five organelles in their model. A grading rubric is also supplied by the author. I think this project is a unique opportunity for students to synthesize a cellular representation and will serve to create long-term learning.

I love the idea of following a drama lesson on "the cell as a candy factory" with offering students the chance to come up with their own analogies as in this lesson plan. Students build 3d models of their cell analogies---the cell as a prison, a bee hive, etc. It's also great language arts integration, since the analogies are essentially metaphors. Students can write about their analogies. Like other inquiry based LPs, there are many entry points for students in this lesson, so it accommodates many different types of learners.
