In this 18 day lesson, students are challenged to design and build a light saber. Students are also required to explain the scientific reasoning behind their design. The lesson incorporates the use of computers to research the design and to share their persuasive paper. There is a full rubric for the persuasive paper provided. There are also pointers on materials and classroom management for the project. In the article, the teacher asked the students to bring in the supplies needed. Teachers may want to apply for money to assist in this project so they may supply the students who need assistance.

Students are instructed to design a light saber in a three week effort to engage students into the nature of technology as stated in the Benchmarks for science literacy. After creating a design students then proceeded to actually build these devises in groups. Students using the guidelines of the Benchmarks write a persuasive paper that explained the value of the project. The author provides the rubric and portion of the Benchmark used in the paper. This is an interesting activity for the end of the school year.
