A teacher uses differentiated activities to allow all students to successfully complete a series of inquiry lessons about the cardiovascular system. The two project activities presented in this article are called ‘Feel the Beat’ and ‘The Disease Book’ were written to provide different levels of accomplishment. Both activities are explained and a worksheet is provided. This is a good example of how this teacher used the beliefs of differentiation to modify activities.

This article provides information on how to differentiate instruction for inquiry explorations. The author planned a unit on the human cardiovascular system and through the lens of differentiation came up with two inquiry projects. The article brought up some important reasons for differentiating: students differ in their learning profiles AND classroom in which students are active learners…are more effective than those (classrooms) in which students are served a one-size-fits-all curriculum and treated as passive recipients of information. For middle school teachers having a difficult time understanding how they might differentiate instruction during a lab or for a research project, this article will show how this particular teacher was able to do so.
