Parameciums are single-celled organisms that have several sensory modalities that students in high school can easily explore. They can either be attracted by or repulsed from chemicals they perceive as either tasty or repugnant. With this in mind a T-maze can be used to test their responses to various stimuli. The body of this article provides all that is needed to set up an experiment and record the data dealing with these organisms and their likes and dislikes to different substances.

This lab is a nice modification of a scientific study concerning chemotaxis in Paramecium.. It would be perfect for a high school life science course. The equipment described could be ordered or it is simple enough, that it could be made yourself. There is also an excellent incorporation of math in this lesson.
