The probe assessment gets the students really thinking about what they have learned and to form their own understandings. I would have the students discuss their ideas before putting them to paper. It is open ended. It doesn't seem too involved however, and I am not sure if it would result with many of them being able to communicate their thoughts clearly

I highly recommend using probes from the series of "Uncovering Student Ideas in Science" - but if you are a Middle or High School educator you will find more value in the chapter probe "Is It a Rock" (version 2). Version 1 is a primary level probe that evaluates students in their view of classification based on sample size.
