Students love a competition. Creating a racer using a raw egg that has to stop before hitting a wall sound like something they would love to work on. This article describes all the aspects of establishing the competition, setting it up, designing cars and testing the device out. This sounds like a truly fun STEM activity in which students brainstorm, design, test and redesign. The article includes a rubric and a photo of one possible car.

This article details two separate activities that will surely engage your students. The first is Egg Racers where students work in teams to design and build a racer that will carry a chicken egg 3 m. The competition involves speed, the ability to protect the egg during transport, and the ability to stop before impacting a wall at the end of the course. I really like the way this exercise engages students in problem solving and group work. The second activity is building a greenhouse. This activity also engages students in group work, and helps them understand how plants grow, what plants need to thrive, and enables them to "give back" to the school by growing produce that can be used in the cafeteria. Both of these activities will surely engage students as they actively participate in learning science.
