This article describes a program where inner city middle school sixth grade girls were paired with undergraduate science majors from a Boston University for a ‘Day of Chemistry.” Together they performed science experiments that dealt with everyday life. These women were to act as role models for the girls in a one on one situation. The women related dry textbook chemistry to real-life phenomena such as synthesis of nylon and slime in polymer chemistry. The girl’s attitude about women in science increased and the women honed their skills as teachers and mentors. This was a win-win situation. This is a good example of how to establish a ‘big sister’ approach to mentoring for tutoring or science fair.

Providing successful role models to young girls is especially important in encouraging them to study science in the future. Middle school students were paired with college undergraduates for a day of chemistry. This activity would be easily implemented between other universities and schools.
