This article chronicles the flights of a student-community based project to collect and record data about the stratosphere. Over a period of weeks students planned, designed and tested their payload to be carried by a balloon over several flights. The student’s efforts and data gained were well work the work put into the project. This type of project is not only a PBL but also a STEM project since students had to design and test a payload box that would carry all the equipment students wanted to include in each flight.

Bob Riddle has written a very interesting article about community involvement in doing balloon launches that send back a lot of pictures and other information to students on the ground. His article reads like a personal journal which would be a great example for students who journal their science experiments. I personally saw the launch from the Kaufmann Stadium and it was thrilling to watch.
