Reading about the safety issues found in Kansas middle school is probably not much different from what exists in other states and locations. Learning from others can often prevent problems from ever occurring. From my years of experience teaching in science labs I have run across many violations in codes and standards. In some experiences the safety of the educator and the students were blatantly ignored. With this said, creating a safety audit for you particular location makes sense. Using it with all people who enter the science lab for science or just for a place to locate kids during testing makes this self audit not only important but in my opinion mandatory. Serious violations should be brought to the attention of the administration and go from there making sure you document what you have done. Ultimately you will be held responsible.
