This article describes a yearlong project to emphasize the skills necessary to become a scientific literate citizen. There are four parts to this project. The first part is to recognize skeptical thinking which is called pseudoscience in this article. The second part students learn to analyze current events. The third part pertains analysis of fiction and nonfiction reading. The fourth part is to develop a students’ skill to observe their world as a science literate person. All aspects of this project are presented. The article provides not only modifications but it describes the students’ perspective as well. This is an interesting and worthwhile activity for eight graders.

Wonderful ideas are contained within that develop scientific literacy through the use of current events, science fiction, and science-related books and podcasts. Templates for book reports, current event analysis, and assessments are also included, as are management tips for class "libraries." Partner up with your team's language arts teacher to create a year-long program towards creating scientifically literate students.
