Light plays such a crucial role in our lives that it’s very hard to imagine a universe without
light. But what is light? How do we describe
its behavior? We have two basic models that we can use to describe light—particle behavior and light behavior—and the debate over the best way to describe light has been waged for centuries. This chapter features the debates of Newton, Einstein, and Compton, and focuses on a one-dimensional, nonrelativistic derivation of the Compton effect as the basis for the chapter.
